The oak canopy is the best thing about Ormond Beach. It's also why we spend so much time here dealing with cracked driveways, tilted sidewalk slabs, and paver patios that developed a hump sometime last year. Live oaks and laurel oaks put out wide, shallow roots that run out well past the canopy, and when one of those roots finds its way under concrete, the concrete loses.

Homeowners usually ask us for one of two things: take the tree out, or grind the roots off and repour. Often neither is the right answer. What you generally want is a root barrier, what most people around here call a root block.

What a Root Block Actually Is

A root barrier is a rigid panel, typically HDPE plastic, set vertically in a trench between the tree and whatever you're protecting. It doesn't kill roots. It redirects them, guiding growth downward and under the obstacle rather than along the surface where it can lift things. Good panels have molded vertical ribs on the tree-facing side that stop roots from turning sideways and circling along the barrier until they find the end.

Depth matters more than anything else. Too shallow and roots simply dive under and pop up on the far side, which is how you end up with a barrier that cost money and solved nothing. In our sandy soils we're typically installing to 24 to 36 inches, with the top edge left just proud of grade so surface roots can't creep over the top.

When a Root Block Is the Right Call

  • You're pouring a new driveway, walkway or patio near an established oak. This is by far the best time; it's cheap when the ground is already open.
  • You have a healthy, valuable tree and damage that's just starting, a hairline crack or slight lift rather than a heaved slab.
  • Roots are heading toward a pool deck, foundation or septic drainfield and you want to get ahead of it.
  • You're replacing existing concrete anyway, so the barrier goes in during the same excavation.

When It Isn't

We'd rather tell you this up front. A root barrier installed on the wrong side of an already-heaved driveway doesn't un-heave it, and cutting major structural roots to install one can destabilize a big tree, which is a genuinely bad trade near a house. Rough guide: cutting roots inside a radius of about three times the trunk diameter is where we start worrying about the tree's stability and long-term health.

If the slab is already badly lifted, the honest options are usually replacing that section with a barrier installed at the same time, or, when the tree is also in decline, removing the tree. That's a judgment call we make standing in the driveway, not over the phone.

What About Just Cutting the Roots?

Grinding out the offending root and repouring is common and it does buy time. Two problems. The tree regrows roots in the same direction, because that's where the water and air are, so you're often back in five to eight years. And every structural root you sever near the trunk reduces the tree's anchorage, which is a real consideration in a county that gets hurricanes. Cutting roots on one side of a large oak and then having that oak in 80 mph wind is not a combination we like.

Where root pruning does make sense, it should be a clean cut with a proper saw rather than a shovel-tear, done outside that three-times-trunk-diameter zone, and ideally paired with a barrier so you're not repeating the job.

How We Install One

Trench between the tree and the target, generally following the edge of the drive or walk. Depth 24 to 36 inches depending on soil and tree. We use a trencher or a mini excavator; hand-digging near a mature oak is sometimes necessary to work around roots we don't want to cut. Panels go in vertically, ribs facing the tree, joints overlapped and locked so nothing threads between them. Backfill gets compacted in lifts, then sod or mulch goes back over the top. On a typical residential run it's a one-day job.

Length: The Detail That Gets Botched

A barrier that's too short is nearly as useless as one that's too shallow, because roots simply travel around the end. The general rule is to extend it well past the area you're protecting on both sides, usually at least five feet beyond each edge of the slab. On a long driveway that means a long barrier, and that's genuinely where the cost sits. Anyone quoting you a bargain root block is probably quoting you a short one.

Designing Around Oaks Instead of Fighting Them

Sometimes the better answer isn't a barrier at all. Pavers over a proper base flex with minor movement and, critically, individual pavers can be lifted and reset for a fraction of what a concrete repour costs. Widening a bed and mulching the root zone instead of paving it works too, and the tree is much happier for it.

Whatever route you take, keep mulch off the trunk itself. Piling it against the bark rots the base, which brings you back to the structural problems in our pre-storm tree guide.

Most residential installs run $35 to $70 per linear foot, so a typical driveway-edge run lands somewhere between $1,200 and $3,500. Depth, soil conditions, how many roots have to be worked around, and access for a trencher are the variables. Installing during new construction or a slab replacement is significantly cheaper.

Will a root barrier kill my oak tree?

A properly placed one shouldn't. It's installed outside the critical root zone and redirects roots rather than removing them. A barrier trenched too close to the trunk, cutting major structural roots, absolutely can harm the tree and make it less stable in wind. Placement is the whole game.

Can I use plastic sheeting or landscape fabric instead?

No. Fabric doesn't stop roots at all, and thin sheeting tears or gets pushed aside. Root barrier panels are rigid HDPE, usually 60 to 80 mil, specifically made to deflect roots downward. It's not a place to improvise.
